![]() First grade sets the standard for a lifetime of learning as well as for social mores and behaviors. ![]() Don’t push, don’t cut in line, don’t splash, and be kind. ![]() But perhaps the most important life lesson she taught her first graders was how to stand in line politely at the drinking fountain. My mom described first grade as “the most transformational time in one’s life.” Kids would come into school not knowing how to say their ABCs and leave reading and writing arrive learning to count and leave doing math enter not knowing how to tie a shoe lace and move on as fairly autonomous little bodies with backpacks and projects in tow. ![]() My mother was a first-grade teacher, a brilliant educator who started scores of kids off to many local and worldwide destinations. ![]()
